In 2001, Dena Little, Storybook Farm's founder, had a wild idea to establish a place where children of all shapes and sizes could experience the joy found only on horseback. Little did she know, God had major plans for this idea. Dena spent her childhood surrounded by horses, whether riding or just in their company, her passion for equines grew. She had aspirations of a career in veterinary medicine, but fortunately for the children whose lives are touched at Storybook Farm, she was a terrible Chemistry and Biology student! She was right where God needed her to be and He was preparing her to do His work.
Shortly after her move from Atlanta to Auburn, Ala. with her young family, the idea began to take form. The details were a bit hazy then, but her
strong conviction, background with horses and hard work ethic, fueled Storybook Farm into what it is today.
We started our ministry at a small nine-acre farm in Auburn, but in roughly two years outgrew that location. So we packed our trailers, loaded our horse and moved north. Ok, it was just a few miles north to Opelika, Ala. Since that time, our family has grown to 15 horses and ponies, 1 miniature horse, 1 miniature Zebu cow, 2 goats, 9 dogs, 8 cats, 1 rabbit, 2 guinea pigs,103 fish, numerous tadpoles and toads - all incredibly sweet and loving, yes even the toads!
God has blessed us with the land, support and volunteers, but the real blessing comes from seeing the smiling faces and accomplishments of our kids. Now remember, our riders are not your everyday, run-of-the-mill children. Storybook's kids are extraordinary! They face daunting obstacles with grace and courage. They teach each of us humility and, most importantly, never to judge a book by its cover.
Storybook operates on the notion that every child is equal on the back of horse. Our playing field is level. The programs and annual events have grown over the years, but the mission has stayed the same. Change a life. Make a friend. Encourage those you encounter.
Our horses and volunteers are the hands and feet of our operation, but the real work comes through God alone. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 3:14
